平泉文化研究センターは、世界遺産「平泉」について
歴史学・考古学及び理化学分析などの観点から総合的に
学術的研究を推進します。
仏国土（浄土）の理想郷として創出された平泉庭園文化を中心に、その意義を総合的に解明することを目標としています。
岩手大学では研究拠点として「平泉文化研究センター」を設け、このセンターを中核に岩手県教育委員会、平泉町教育委員会、いわて高等教育コンソーシアム（岩手大学・いわて県立大学・盛岡大学・富士大学・岩手医科大学）や海外の大学、文化庁、奈良文化財研究所等と連携を図り、平泉文化研究を国際的・学術的な観点の元で総合化することをめざしています。
このことにより、東アジアにおける平泉文化の国際的意義を解明し、その学術的意義をとりわけ中世日本文化及び未解明な古代中国庭園文化に関する研究の新展開を図り、併せて平泉文化の普遍性に関する国際理解の一層の進展及び地域に立地する文化遺産を活かした地域振興への貢献を図ります。
■Centre for Hiraizumi Studies
The Centre for Hiraizumi Studies promotes scholarly research in the fields of history, archaeology and scientific analysis related to the World Heritage site of Hiraizumi.
The goal of this research is comprehensive understanding of the meaning expressed through the Hiraizumi garden culture, created as the utopian Buddhist Pure Land.
The Iwate University Centre for Hiraizumi Studies was created as a research hub to serve the Iwate Board of Education, Hiraizumi Board of Education, Iwate Higher Education Consortium (Iwate University, Iwate Prefectural University, Morioka University, Fuji University, Iwate Medical University), as well as other agencies such as universities overseas, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. The purpose is to integrate Iwaizumi cultural research from a scholarly and international perspective.
Through such efforts, the Centre plans to work toward the clarification of the meaning of Hiraizumi culture on an international level in East Asia, in particular to academically investigate Japanese culture of the Middle Ages, as well as unexplained aspects of ancient Chinese garden culture, and to contribute to regional development through the cultural heritage of Hiraizumi.
